Solidarity with Ukraine
Ukraine, a sovereign European country, has been attacked and invaded by the army of Russian Federation. Something we could hardly imagine in civilized Europe of 21st century.
Our blog has been fully dedicated to topics related to electric drives. We have never planned to publish politically motivated posts. Yet, this unprecedented conflict and act of aggression cannot be overlooked.
As you may or should know, in 1991, when the Soviet Union was dissolved, Ukraine had more nuclear weapons installed on its land than the Russian Federation had. This had a very straight-forward reason as the weapons were pepared towards the western world and today’s Ukraine was the most west located part of Soviet Union. However, Ukraine gave up those nuclear missiles. In exchange, the US, UK and Russia promised Ukraine to respect its independence and intact borders. This was a security guarantee that the superpowers signed in so called Budapest memorandum in 1994.
I have visited Ukraine back in 2013. It is a wonderful country with hard working people that went through terrible things in the last several decades.
It fills me with frustration that the world watches this tragedy on-line and there is almost noone with the courage to act. This is not a movie, this is reality.
It seems that today mostly the countries experienced with Russian aggression, such as Poland or Czech Republic, show the most solidarity and specific support. Also Sweden took specific actions and supports promptly. And finally the Baltic countries that have always warned western Europe against this scenaio and have not been taken seriously, unfortunately.
On the other hand, countries with troubled history such as Germany again show their hypocracy. Nazi Germany caused terrible massacres at the area of what is Ukraine today. One would have hoped that Germany would lead by example today. However, the economic interests are obviously more important than the lives of innocent people. UK and US could also provide far more support bearing the Budapest memorandum in mind.
Feel free to support Ukraine in this largest crisis in Europe since WWII. There are many peaceful ways from lifting your voice in social media, donating to humanitarian organisations, appealing on your government. Whatever you find appropriate. Never underestimate the collective power of individuals unified worldwide for a righteous thing.
Ukrainian people, we are with you!
